Putting mental health first in the wedding industry

According to research, one of the most stressful things you can do in your life is get married. Although weddings are a lovely and special occasion, the planning and time it can take to create this perfect day can put huge strain on your mental health.


It is also the same for those working within the wedding industry. All wedding suppliers want to make sure everything is absolutely perfect for the wedding couple on their special day, so although this is their passion and what they excel at, it can also impact on their mental health.

Especially at the moment.


With COVID-19 restrictions causing thousands and thousands of changes within the wedding industry (and many more to come!), although the wedding couple suffer the most, so do wedding suppliers.


For suppliers who are self-employed this not just affects their business, it affects their livelihood. If they don’t earn money, food doesn’t go on the table and bills don’t get paid - it’s that simple.


That’s why we're so keen on helping to promote the ‘postpone don’t cancel’ movement throughout the wedding industry. Postponing your wedding day to another date in the future can help keep wedding suppliers in business, meaning your wedding day can still happen, as you wanted, with them at a later date.


Here at Mode For..., we are hosting a completely free mental health awareness session on Monday 21st September at 4pm, for anyone in the wedding industry. This session will help you become more mental health aware and help you to identify early signs and symptoms of mental ill health of not only yourself, but also your clients and colleagues. There will also be an open and honest Q&A with weddings and event industry professional, Mode For… Director and mental health advocate and trainer for Mental Health First Aid England, Tabby Kerwin.

We’ve all heard the term ‘Bridezilla.’


I’m so thankful that I’ve always had the best clients and never had any ‘Bridezillas.’


But I want to introduce you to another player in the wedding planning and wedding day scenario.

The ‘Mumzilla.’


One of the greatest causes of stress for couples when planning a wedding is a ‘Mumzilla,’ as this is a creature no-one will or can say ‘No’ too!


But I do say a massive ‘NO’ to the Mumzilla.


When it comes to planning a wedding, there is a role for everyone to play, even if that’s just a supporting role, but the most important thing to remember is this wedding only belongs to two people; the couple getting married.


Unfortunately, whilst sometimes it does come from a place of love and wanting to help, some Mums overstep the mark; running the show, making the decisions, controlling the guest list, deciding on the décor, choosing the canapés and even picking the dress. None of these responsibilities fall on a ‘mum’ unless it has been specifically requested or for a particular reason that the couple can’t do it themselves.


Now, I’ve actually met a few Mumzillas and I am not scared of them and have put them back in their cages, but often I see Mums swooping in and controlling the whole shebang when the couple would love nothing more than a ‘do’ in the back garden with all their mates and beer pong, but what they got was a full stately manor with white doves.


The bottom line is, if you’re a Mum, rein it in. Check in with yourself that you're not being a little OTT. This is NOT your wedding. Be supportive, be exactly what your offspring need you to be, but don’t take over the show and you certainly don’t get to dictate what and how things are done or who comes to celebrate, even if you are footing the bill. Of course, you get to make requests and have ideas and be a part of the process if that’s right, but even if you’re financially responsible, this payment does not give you the authority to hijack the whole day.


Let the couple have their day.


Help your daughter be the calm bride or son be the calm groom. Help, love and support, please do not add to the stress, strain and already present pressure that comes with planning a wedding.

The sound of an acoustic guitar floated through the lawns at Hargate Hall this weekend, as our beautiful bride Sarah, took the long walk from the main hall to picturesque summer house in the garden.


Green Days’ - Time of your life was the couples chosen soundtrack. The sun shone and a light breeze genteelly rustled the trees, Alex looked up and smiled at his bride as she walked towards him. Sarah looked stunning, with an exquisitely detailed wedding dress that just kissed the floor and a bouquet of bright colour flowers that only added to Sarah's beauty.


This was the first outdoor ceremony I've seen at Hargate and it was pretty special! Sarah and Alex’s wedding was the perfect start to our month of September weddings at Hargate Hall.


The sun continued to shine as guests drank prossecco and cocktails after the ceremony on the Terrace. The groomsmen had set up an incredible cocktail bar and all the children played garden games and enjoyed the bouncy castle. It was such a lovely atmosphere; a wedding filled with laughter, love and friendship.


The wedding breakfast was incredible too and we loved supplying the food. Our favourite Italian style sharing starter boards of cheeses, meats and antipasti veg. followed by delicious chicken and mash, accompanied by fresh chanteray carrots and crisp green beans. For dessert we served an amazing sharing plate, piled high with chocolate torte, lemon tart and local Bakewell tart, with of course - lashings of fresh cream!


We loved decorating the marquee with over 100 colourful lanterns, adorning the ceiling and transforming our beloved marquee. With all the flowers and centre pieces styled by Mode For... it was a busy weekend for us.


Sarah and Alex fell in love with Hargate Hall and we are so happy we could make their wedding day dreams come true. Wishing you so much happiness.

After three long years of planning and preparing, Gemma and Aaron got Married last weekend at Hargate Hall and we had so much fun celebrating with them.


The Friday set up was a family affair, with everyone getting stuck in and helping to prepare the marquee. As we all worked together to string the beautiful ivy from the ceilings and draping it throughout the marquee, we could hear the rain. Hammering down, it had gone really dark outside and every time we carried things from the car we got soaked!


Gemma looked at me and asked if the weather would be like this tomorrow? Now at Mode For… we are complete perfectionists and control freaks (it’s why we are so good at planning weddings) but the one thing we can’t control is the weather! Fast forward to Saturday afternoon and as the happy couple burst through the beautiful doors at Hargate Hall we wished them congratulations in the glorious sunshine. Gemma turned to me and said, “I can’t believe this weather, it’s beautiful!”.


Rain or shine your wedding will be beautiful too. But the best part of any wedding for us is seeing the bride and groom so completely happy and relaxed. Gemma and Aaron were so happy, stress free and calm - they were able to enjoy every moment of their wedding day.


As well as coordinating the wedding day, Mode For… catered for the wedding breakfast. Preparing our signature delicious antipasti sharing platters: piled high with Italian deli meats and cheeses, mountains of fresh rustic bread and marinated vegetables for starters. Followed by Italian style chicken wrapped in bacon stuffed full with pesto and smothered in our (secret recipe) house tomato and basil sauce, with stacks of dauphinoise potatoes and steamed vegetables. It was a feast! For dessert all the guests tucked in to the incredible wedding cake and scrumptious brownies, Eton mess and cookies, provided by their incredible family.


There were so many amazing homemade touches and thoughtful additions to Gemma and Aaron’s wedding, the memory table and beautiful guest book showed how much planning and attention to detail the couple had.

Some people spend over two years planning their wedding. It should be a happy time, making memories, personalising your special day and perfecting your plans. For some people though, planning a wedding can be stressful, getting caught up in the ‘should’ and ‘shouldn’t’ of wedding etiquette and unnecessary traditions.

We especially love DIY weddings! It means you really get to put your own stamp on a venue and make a wedding truly reflect your style and ideas. We believe, the best bit about a DIY wedding is the set-up before the big day. It’s so much fun to be a part of - seeing plans come together is pure magic! We have learnt a few things over the years and here are our top tips for making wedding set up just as much fun as the wedding day...


1. Play some music! - You need your favourite music on whilst your decorating your venue! It fills your team workers with enthusiasm and sets a great tone for the day.


2. Provide food & drinks - You will spend most of the day before the wedding setting-up and everyone will need lots of energy, make sure you feed your team of workers supplying them with endless cups of tea (or prosecco!).


3. Set out clear job roles - The key to DIY wedding set up is planning and team work. Spend some time allocating jobs before you start setting up, it will be so much quicker and less stressful if everyone knows what their job role is. Who’s responsible for setting out chairs? or hanging the bunting? You get the idea.


4. Have a deadline - The night before your wedding should be free of stress, make sure you set a time to finish. We think sitting back with a glass of wine by 6pm is perfect and we aim to help all our brides and grooms achieve this. It’s more important to enjoy your wedding day than stay up all night folding napkins!


5. Hire a Wedding Co-ordinator - Just because you can do everything yourself, doesn’t mean you should. Sometimes asking for help is ok and it means less stress and more fun. Talk to us today about how a wedding co-ordinator can help bring your DIY wedding to life !
